“When you …, then I will love you.”
“I will love you if …”
“You have to earn my love.”
We have all been on the receiving end of statements like this, whether they were spoken out loud or quietly implied. But Jesus’ love is completely different. Others warned that his association with certain people made him look bad, but he cared about the person more than his own image. He wasn’t embarrassed by anyone, and he didn’t require them to complete a checklist in order to be counted worthy of his love. The same is true for you!
Jesus knows you personally. He knows your strengths (the part of yourself that you are proud of), and he knows your weaknesses (the part of yourself that you hope no one will see). You don’t have to earn Jesus’ love—he already loves you!
In fact, the Bible says that even while we were stuck in sin and considered enemies of God, Jesus loved us and gave up his life for us (Romans 5:8-10). He saved us not because of how good we are, but because of his grace. So how will you respond to this kind of love? The first step is to put your faith in him.
Dear God in heaven, I am so glad I don’t have to hide anything from you, and I’m so glad I don’t have to prove my worth to you. You know me inside and out, and you love me. Thank you for being gracious to me. Help me put my faith in you alone. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
